The Management Team
Karen (Nursery Manager)
Karen has over 15 years of experience of working in the Early Years sector, with 9 of those years being in a managerial role. During this time Karen has been able to make an impact on the industry, ensuring that children’s holistic development and security is the priority. She is a major advocate for inspiring and empowering her team through consistent communication and engagement, along with recognising and celebrating their successes. By creating an inclusive and harmonious environment amongst the team, parents and children, it fosters a sense of togetherness at the nursery where the parents feel like it’s a home-from-home.
Bonnie (Deputy Manager)
Bonnie is one of the most experienced members of the Fennies Family and the quality she continues to provide is a testament to that. Bonnie’s career in childcare started at home after she was inspired by raising a child herself, and from there she decided to turn it into a career and has never looked back! One of her favourite experiences from working in Early Years education is being a part of all the magical milestones the children achieve during their time at the nursery. Through her role, Bonnies continues to promote education for all, whether that be the little ones preparing for school and the life ahead, or helping the team progress in their professional development.
The Education Team
Paula (Regional SENCO and Inclusion Manager)
Paula provides extensive support for children who have additional needs or speak English as an additional language (EAL). She also helps enhance our team’s understanding of SENCO and EAL through meetings, empowering us to better provide support for children with EAL or SEN. She has had extensive opportunities to collaborate with Fennies Purley, working with children from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and providing valuable support for their English as an Additional Language (EAL) needs.
Ruth (Educational Advisor)
Ruth plays a crucial role in inspiring our teams to create engaging environments for the children. She is a strong advocate for our ‘Book of the Month’ initiative and has recently been rolling out a new campaign called ‘Music and Movement’. Music-based activities are an essential component of our curriculum due to its profound benefits on brain development and holistic well-being for children in Early Years. So much so our upcoming Open Morning on the 1st of March revolves around it, so if you’re interested in finding out more about the benefits of Music and Movement, book yourself a ticket today! Ruth recently collaborated with Fennies Purley by holding a ‘Playdough Disco’ session with the children where they roll out the playdough in different ways depending on the music, helping them develop their listening and fine motor skills.
Majka (Art Specialist)
Majka works closely with all our nurseries, visiting each of our 20 settings regularly to run sessions with the children to help them learn through the wonders of art. Every month, Majka introduces an ‘Artist of the Month’ where the children engage in various art-based activities inspired by that artist and their work. This month’s focus has been Frida Kahlo so the children have done activities where they discover different colours and textures allowing the children to explore their artistic skills and creativity, all whilst learning about influential artists. When Majka visited Fennies Purley recently, the children did nature collages, using watercolours with pipettes and adding real foliage to the painting, so that by the end when they took the foliage off, it revealed a beautiful pattern.
Explore the Nursery
Our nursery in Purley has been meticulously designed with spaces that are purpose-built for nurturing children through each stage of their development. One remarkable feature introduced by Fennies Purley at their nursery is the displays on their notice boards outside each room, showing the native background of each of the children in the room. This helps them ensure they continue to provide inclusive and welcoming practice that tailors towards the diverse backgrounds of their children.
The furniture at the nursery is exclusively created by Community Playthings. They design child-focused furniture with safety features such as pinch free hinges and rounded corners to foster a harmonious and safe environment. Their products are crafted by renewable resources such as solid wood finishes and water-based coatings, ensuring the use of harmful chemicals like styrene, phthalates and BPA are avoided.
Our Purley nursery features dedicated rooms for different age groups…
Explorers Room
Our room is designed to suit children between the ages of 3 months and 18 months. While children are this age, they are beginning to crawl and stand, therefore the room is designed and laid out in a manner that encourages the opportunity for that. Exploring using their senses is pivotal at this early stage as they begin to familiarise themself with their surroundings and establish early levels of communication and language.
At Fennies Purley, the Explorers Room has a dedicated baby garden that allows the children to seamlessly transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, encouraging the children to explore and develop their physical and fine motor skills. The room also has a designated sensory area where the children can relax and sleep in a serene and calm environment, helping them maintain their daily routines. We are very passionate about providing nurturing environments for our children to grow and develop in.
The team in this room will operate at a ratio of 1:3 enabling the children to form close and personal bonds with their assigned key person. Within the room there is a nappy changing area to allow for easy access and helping day-to-day processes to run smoothly.
Discoverers Room
The Discoverers Room is designed to suit children aged between 18 and 24 months, and during this stage, the children’s personalities start to form as they discover what they like and dislike. By this stage, their communication will be displayed in a much prouder manner, whilst their levels of movement will increase as they begin to move with confidence. They will also become increasingly curious at this age, and in order to suit these needs, the room has been tailor made to encourage the children to explore independently.
At Purley, Christchurch Road, the Discoverers Room is spacious and versatile, with two easily recognisable sections within the room. This allows the team to be flexible and change the environments on a regular basis to allow the children to discover their interests. The children also have access to the garden which enables them the opportunity to learn through educational activities in outdoor environments.
Our Discoverers team will operate at a ratio of 1:3 in this room to enable the children to create close bonds with their assigned key person. Within the room there is a nappy changing area and dedicated milk kitchen to allow for easy access and helping day-to-day processes to run smoothly.
Creators Room
Our Creators Room is designed to suit children aged between 2 years and 3 years. By this stage, most of the children are starting to utilise their natural abilities and build on their language and communication skills as they begin to socialise more and create relationships with each other. Progress is made in terms of the children’s independence, as they start to take control over certain activities such as serving their own food at mealtimes and taking control of their self-care routines.
At Fennies Purley, Christchurch Road, the Creators Room has clear defined areas to allow the children to learn through different resources and develop in a holistic manner. In particular they have a reading corner where they run their ‘Chatterbox’ program which encourages the children to develop their communication skills and enhance their vocabulary.
Inventors Room
At Fennies Purley, they have 2 Inventors Rooms that are connected, allowing for a very spacious area for the children to explore. This room is designed to suit children between the ages of 3 years and 5 years, and at this age the children are in the ‘transition’ phase as they prepare for going to school. Therefore, the educators allow children the space to independently take on tasks. Bespoke experiences based on the children’s interests are created, providing opportunities for them to develop skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths (STEAM).
The Inventors Room has free-flow access to the garden, allowing for seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. The room is full of real-life resources to encourage your child to solve problems and develop more complex role-play skills. One unique area that their room at Purley has is a dedicated space where children can talk about their feelings, nurturing them to develop their emotional intelligence from an early age to help best prepare them for life.
Garden
Fennies Purley, Christchurch Road has a spacious garden that encourages the children to explore outdoor environments. The garden includes features such as a sandbox, race track and cosy den, helping the children develop physical, communication and turn-taking skills. It also has a mud kitchen where the children can ignite their curiosity and spark their creativity.
Along with the main garden, Fennies Purley also has a baby garden and toddler garden, allowing them both to have their own space to explore safely and securely. By having 3 gardens it allows the nursery rooms to have free-flow access to the gardens so they continue to explore them as and when they wish.
Food at Fennies
We have a wonderful on-site chef at Fennies Purley, who cook nutritional meals to fuel the children throughout the day. Our menus are rotated twice a year in line with the changing of the seasons and we are proudly accredited with EYA (Early Years Alliance's), prioritising your child’s well-being above all else. Food is very important to us, as it is the children!
The EYA believes that good nutrition is one of the fundamentals of children’s well-being and that a consistent, evidence-based approach is essential to establishing healthy eating practices. At Fennies, we accommodate every child’s unique needs whether that be tolerances, allergens or preferences, helping create a positive environment for the children to learn about food and nutrition.
